EurECCA calls on EU member states to solve the problem of ghost flights

in the light of the effects of the Coronavirus EurECCA calls on all EU member states to allow airlines to suspend flights without them running the risk of losing their allocated flight slots

EU member states are forcing airlines to keep routes open although there is a lack of passengers due to the escalating problem of the Coronavirus health emergency.  Airlines are being obliged to fly the slots they have, and if they fail to do so, their slots will be taken away from them and distributed to other parties. While in a normal situation this would be a completely understandable and defendable position, however with the spread of the Coronavirus and its devastating impact on travel this is ludicrous. Not only does this expose air crews to the unnecessary risk of getting infected, it also puts unnecessary strain on the environment, at a time when President Ursula von der Leyen’s European Green Deal commits to tackling climate and environmental-related challenges for the EU.

EurECCA therefore calls on all EU member states to be more flexible and allow airlines to suspend flights without them running the risk of losing their allocated flight slots.
